Introduction
The Rubilis apricot, part of the Rubyngo® series (C.O.V.), is a self-fertile, early-ripening red apricot bred by Newcot in France. Known for its striking, fully red skin and high productivity, it offers a juicy, aromatic fruit with excellent sensory qualities, reminiscent of traditional apricots.
History
Introduced by Newcot and presented by IPS on June 15, 2015, at Vivai F.lli Zanzi in Ferrara, Italy, Rubilis was developed as part of the Rubyngo® red apricot series launched about a decade ago. It has been tested for years to confirm its rusticity and quality, with commercial availability starting in 2018/19 through exclusive nurseries like Albisole. Its breeding focused on self-fertility and flavour to revolutionise the apricot market.
Regions
Originating in France, Rubilis was bred by Newcot and tested in regions like Ferrara, Italy. It is suited to Mediterranean climates with moderate chilling requirements (around 500–600 hours) and is now cultivated in Europe, particularly in Italy, France, and Greece, through licensed nurseries such as Vitro Hellas and Vivai F.lli Zanzi. Its adaptability supports expansion in similar temperate zones.
Flavours & Texture
Rubilis apricots boast a deep red, uniform skin with juicy, sweet flesh and a strong, aromatic flavour, often compared to “old-day” apricots. They have a good Brix level (around 14–15°), indicating high sweetness, and a firm yet tender texture that resists cracking. Their balanced taste makes them ideal for fresh eating or culinary applications.
Preparation
Wash Rubilis apricots thoroughly and enjoy fresh, with the vibrant red skin intact, after removing the pit. They can be halved for grilling, poaching, or baking in tarts, jams, or compotes. Their firm flesh suits recipes like apricot-glazed chicken or desserts such as apricot clafoutis.
