Introduction
You’ll have to cut open the African cherry to see why it’s the star of the show! This vitamin-rich fruit has a star-shaped inner flesh, giving it the nickname star apple. Interestingly, this fruit is thought to lessen PMS symptoms and reduce sickness in pregnancy.
History
The African cherry originates in West Africa - particularly Nigeria - where it goes by its original name: agbalumo. Sadly, the African cherry tree has been officially endangered for the past 35 years. This is, in part, because it’s so highly desired for the medicinal properties of its bark.
Regions
In case you hadn’t guessed from its name, the African cherry tree grows in Africa. It’s particularly prevalent in mountainous regions of central and south Africa and on islands including Madagascar.
Flavours & Texture
The African cherry fruit is a difficult one to describe since the skin, flesh, and seeds all have quite different flavours. The flesh has a sweet-sour taste with subtle citrus and acidic notes. It has a fibrous texture, whilst the skin is gummy.
Preparation
Cut in half and eat the flesh off of the skin, removing the seeds as you go. Alternatively, use a spoon to spoon out the flesh.
Nutritional Value
The African cherry is rich in vitamin C and calcium, and has anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties.
