Introduction
Key Lime is a delightful citrus fruit bursting with zesty goodness. Key limes are small, at just 1-2 inches, but are renowned for their distinct flavour and versatility – and, of course, key lime pie!
History
Key Lime, scientifically known as Citrus aurantifolia, has a rich history intertwined with the Florida Keys in the USA. The fruit's name originates from its association with the Florida Keys, where it was first introduced in the early 19th century. Key Limes gained popularity for their unique taste and became a staple ingredient in the renowned Key Lime Pie, adding to their culinary significance.
Regions
Originally hailing from Southeast Asia, Key Limes made their way to the Florida Keys and the West Indies during the colonial era. Today, they are predominantly grown in tropical and subtropical regions such as Mexico, Brazil, and the Caribbean Islands. Their vibrant flavours and aromatic zest have made them a popular choice for various culinary creations around the world.
Flavours & Texture
Key Limes offer a distinctive flavour profile that is both tart and sweet, providing a delightful balance that excites the palate. These small citrus fruits pack a punch, with a tangy acidity that is softened by a hint of sweetness. The flesh of Key Limes is juicy and tender, while their thin, smooth rind releases a fragrant and invigorating aroma.
Preparation
To enjoy the zesty taste of Key Limes, start by gently rolling the fruit between your hands to release the juice. Cut it in half and squeeze the juice over your favourite dishes or beverages. Key Lime juice is a popular addition to refreshing cocktails, dressings, marinades, and of course, the iconic Key Lime Pie. The fruit's acidity can also be used to enhance the flavours of seafood, salads, and various desserts.
