Banana - Lady Finger / Sugar
Country of Origin: Southeast Asia
Average Weight: 100 Grams
Introduction
Good things really do come in small packages! The lady finger banana is sometimes called the baby banana due to its small size. They are significantly sweeter than other bananas, hence the alternative name sugar banana. Despite this, they are surprisingly low in sugar, so make an excellent small and sweet treat for those who want to cut back on sugar.
History
The history of the lady finger banana is quite difficult to track down, but we do know that bananas in general originated in Southeast Asia, where many wild bananas still grow today. In the fourteenth century, the banana trade began, bringing many varieties to other parts of the world.
Regions
Lady finger bananas are most commonly found in tropical areas, being native to Australia, Ecuador and Southeast Asia.
Flavours & Texture
Being one of the most delicious banana varieties, the lady finger has a sweet and creamy flavour that is almost honey-like. The texture is similar to that of the common cavendish banana.
Preparation
Lady fingers can be peeled and eaten the same as common bananas. They are excellent for fruit salads, since the flesh doesn’t oxidise and brown like other banana varieties. If overripe, we recommend adding the sweet fruit to banana bread.
Nutritional Value
Lady finger bananas are very nutritious. They are rich in potassium, fibre, vitamins and minerals, and are low in sugar despite their sweet taste.
