History

The Kaffir/Makrut Lime has a history deeply intertwined with Southeast Asian culture. This exotic citrus fruit has been cherished for centuries, both for its culinary applications and its medicinal properties. The fruit's origins can be traced back to Indonesia, Thailand, and surrounding regions, where it has long been celebrated for its unique characteristics.

Regions

Kaffir/Makrut Lime originated in the lush landscapes of Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Indonesia and Thailand. These regions boast the ideal climate and soil conditions for the fruit to thrive. Today, it is widely cultivated across various tropical regions worldwide, including Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, and even in some parts of Africa and Australia.

Flavours & Texture

The Kaffir/Makrut Lime offers vibrant flavours and an invigorating fragrance. The highly aromatic leaves and the zest of this fruit are cherished for their intense citrusy notes with hints of lemon and herbal undertones. The textured peel, deeply wrinkled and bumpy, adds to its uniqueness. When sliced open, you'll discover the fruit's acidic juice, which imparts a refreshing tang.

Preparation

Begin by utilising the aromatic leaves. Finely chop or bruise the leaves and add them to soups, curries, stir-fries, and marinades, infusing the dish with a citrus aroma. The zest can be grated or sliced thinly and used to enhance the flavours of sauces, dressings, desserts, or even cocktails. The fruit's juice can also be extracted and employed to add a tangy kick to various dishes.
