Bergamot orange (Citrus bergamia) is a fruit which belongs to the group of citrus fruits. It has a yellowish or green colour which is similar to a lime. Scientific research indicated that bergamot orange is probably a hybrid between bitter orange and lemon. Bergamot oranges are best suited for flavoring and are not commonly utilized for fresh eating because of their sour and bitter taste.
Their exact origination is still unclear, but it is believed that bergamot oranges are originated from Asia. They have been introduced in Mediterranean countries especially in Italy by Italian traders during the 18th century.
They are found in Mediterranean and particularly in Italy, the top bergamot orange producer in the world. Other significant producers include Northern Africa, Southeast Asia, Argentina, Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, Brazil, and Algeria.
Flavours & Texture
Their taste has been described as very acidic, tart, and bitter, which makes it generally unsuitable for fresh eating. It resembles the taste of a sour orange and its flesh is generally soft.
You should peel the fruit as its flesh is not edible. Most people find it very sour and bitter and instead of eating raw or in juice they use in marmalade, marinades or in deserts.
Bergamot orange contains good amounts of fiber and they are also rich in vitamin C.
