Iwasaki Satsuma is a type of mandarin orange, specifically a cultivar of the Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu). It's prized for its excellent flavour and ease of peeling, making it a popular choice among citrus enthusiasts. The fruit originated in Japan but is now cultivated in various regions worldwide. It's commonly enjoyed fresh, as a snack. Iwasaki Satsuma is typically small to medium-sized, round to oval in shape, and has a thin, easy-to-peel skin somewhere between green, yellow, and orange. The skin can sometimes have a slightly rough texture. Inside, it contains seedless, juicy segments that are often a vibrant orange colour.
The Iwasaki Satsuma is a citrus fruit with deep historical roots. Originating in Japan, this fruit has been cherished for centuries. Its history is intertwined with Japanese culture, where it holds significance in various rituals and traditions. Satsuma is named after the former Satsuma Province, now part of Kagoshima Prefecture, where it was first cultivated. It has since gained popularity and is now cultivated in several regions around the world.
While the Iwasaki Satsuma has its origins in Japan, it is now cultivated in various regions with suitable climates. Besides Japan, you can find Satsuma groves in parts of the United States, such as California and Florida, as well as in Mediterranean countries like Spain. The fruit's adaptability to different climates has made it a favourite among growers looking to produce this exquisite citrus variety.
