The Rougecot apricot, a self-fertile, red-skinned variety developed by COT International in France, is prized for its vibrant, fully red fruit and exceptional flavour. Its attractive appearance and sweet, aromatic taste, reminiscent of cherries, distinguish it as a standout in modern apricot cultivation.
History
Introduced by COT International, the Rougecot apricot (variety number 2011-72) was first unveiled to the public in June 2017 in the Costières du Gard, France. Developed with a focus on Sharka (plum pox virus) resistance, it has been under study for its genetic markers since its inception. Its rapid fruit set and consistent production were demonstrated over five years of trials, leading to its EU variety protection application in 2015.
Regions
Originating in France, specifically bred by COT International in Nîmes, the Rougecot apricot is adapted to temperate climates with medium chilling requirements (500–600 hours). It is primarily grown in Mediterranean regions, including Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur, and is distributed through licensed nurseries in Europe, such as Vitro Hellas in Greece and Battistini Vivai in Italy. Its cultivation is expanding due to its commercial appeal.
Flavours & Texture
Rougecot apricots are celebrated for their juicy, sweet flesh with a high sugar content (15° Brix) and a distinctive cherry-like aroma. The fruit has a light orange flesh with a firm texture (78 Durofel hardness) and a smooth, vibrant red skin that resists cracking. Its balanced flavor and appealing texture make it suitable for fresh eating and culinary uses like tagines or desserts.
Preparation
To prepare Rougecot apricots, wash thoroughly and eat fresh, enjoying the skin’s vibrant colour and flavour. For cooking, halve and remove the pit; they can be grilled, poached, or baked in dishes like tarts or jams. Their firm flesh holds well in recipes, such as spiced chicken tagine with couscous or an apricot fool dessert.
