Introduction

Etrog is a remarkable exotic fruit that offers exquisite flavours and captivating aromas. Known for its distinct appearance and delightful taste, the Etrog fruit is a true gem with a rich history.

History

The Etrog fruit, also referred to as the Citron, has an intriguing history that spans thousands of years. With roots dating back to ancient times, this fruit holds great cultural and religious significance. It is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, where it was cultivated and revered for its unique attributes.

Regions

Etrog's origins can be traced to ancient Israel and Iran, where it was cultivated for centuries. Today, it is grown in various parts of the world, including Italy, Morocco, Greece, and California. These diverse regions contribute to the distinct characteristics of the fruit, resulting in subtle flavour variations.

Flavours & Texture

Etrog offers a delightful blend of bitter, sweet, tangy, and citrus notes. Its vibrant yellow rind encases a juicy flesh that is often described as refreshing, with hints of lemon and floral undertones. The texture of the thick white pith is smooth and spongy, whilst the flesh in the centre is juicy. It also has a beautiful citrus aroma that adds to the overall experience.

Preparation

Etrog is best enjoyed as an ingredient for things like marmalade, jams, desserts, or even a delicious limencello! The distinct, zesty, and citrusy flavours of Etrog make it a great ingredient in various culinary creations. Start by washing the fruit, then slice it into thin wedges or sections, removing any seeds. You can use and eat both the thick white pith and the juicy flesh in the centre.
