Mamey Sapote, or "Pouteria Sapota", is a luscious and captivating fruit with an enticing aroma, vibrant colour, and rich flavours. It averages 8 to 25 cm in length, with a thick, rough, brown skin that peels away to reveal a creamy, smooth flesh that ranges from orange to red in colour. The black seeds in the centre are inedible when raw. Mamey Sapote is only edible when fully ripe – you can determine its ripeness by squeezing it; it should give slightly.

Mamey Sapote has a captivating history that dates back centuries. Indigenous to Central America, this fruit has been cherished by the Mayans and Aztecs for its remarkable taste and medicinal properties. It holds a significant cultural importance and is considered a symbol of abundance and fertility in many ancient civilisations.

Mamey Sapote is native to Central America, particularly the regions of Mexico and Guatemala. Today, it is cultivated in various tropical and subtropical regions around the world. You can find it flourishing in countries like Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Florida, and parts of South America, where the warm climate and fertile soil create ideal growing conditions.

Flavours & Texture

Mamey Sapote's creamy, vibrant orange flesh is infused with a sweet and tropical flavour reminiscent of a blend of sweet potato, pumpkin, and apricot. This wonderful flavour is enhanced by the smooth, buttery texture, making every bite truly indulgent.

Start by slicing the fruit lengthwise and removing the large seed from the centre. The flesh can be enjoyed directly, either scooped out with a spoon or cut into cubes.
