Introduction
The Ruby Orange has an inconspicuous, normal-looking skin that hides a vibrant red-coloured flesh inside, resembling a Ruby Red Grapefruit. It offers a juicier texture and a sweeter taste than other orange varieties.
Regions
Ruby oranges are primarily grown in Mediterranean climates, with Italy, Spain, and the United States (particularly California) being the major producers. These regions provide the perfect combination of warm days and cool nights needed to develop the fruit's distinctive deep red colouration and unique flavour profile.
History
The history of ruby oranges dates back to the 18th century in Sicily, where they were first cultivated. They have since become a significant part of Mediterranean culture, often associated with traditional dishes and festivals. Over time, their popularity spread across Europe and eventually to other parts of the world, appreciated not only for their unique taste but also for their vibrant appearance and health benefits, as they're packed with antioxidants.
Flavours & Texture
Ruby oranges are celebrated for their very sweet yet tangy flavour, which combines the familiar taste of traditional oranges with subtle raspberry-like undertones. The fruit's deep red flesh is both juicy and succulent, providing a refreshing and satisfying experience. The skin is typically thicker and slightly more textured than that of regular oranges, adding to their distinctive appeal.
