Introduction

Ambarella, also known as the April Plum, Hog Plum, or Golden Apple, is a unique tropical fruit prized for its crisp texture and vibrant, tropical flavour. Its vibrant green-to-yellow skin and spiny seed set it apart visually, while its juicy flesh offers a refreshing taste, making it a popular ingredient in salads, chutneys, and refreshing drinks.

History

Ambarella has been an important fruit in tropical cultures for centuries, used in traditional medicine for its purported health benefits, including digestive and immune support. In several cultures, it is enjoyed in various forms, from pickled and spiced preparations to fresh juices. The fruit’s popularity has grown over time, finding a place in local cuisines and herbal remedies across the tropics.

Regions

Ambarella is believed to have originated in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Today, it is widely cultivated in warm climates around the world, including parts of the Caribbean, Central and South America, India, and West Africa, where it thrives in warm, humid environments.

Flavours & Texture

Ambarella has a crisp, crunchy texture, similar to an apple, with a juicy flesh that balances tart and sweet flavours. The skin is often slightly astringent, while the flesh offers a refreshing, tropical bite. When ripe, the fruit becomes more golden and slightly softer, with a flavour reminiscent of pineapple and mango.

Preparation

Rinse under water and eat like an apple. Be careful of the spiky seed inside which is not edible. You can also slice.
