They were first cultivated by an apple cultivar at Tohoku Research Station in Japan and are a cross between two American apple varietiesāthe Red Delicious and old Virginia Ralls Janet also known as the "Rawls Jennet".
In Japan, Fuji apples continue to be an unrivalled best-seller but in China, the Fuji Apple accounts for almost 70% of the 43 million tons of apples grown. The Fuji apple is also popular in the United States where over 24 cultivators currently grow Fuji Apples on a commercial scale.
