Banana passionfruit is a group of more than 60 different Passiflora species which originated from South America. The most common banana passionfruit looks like a banana as it is yellow and it has an elongated shape.


The plant is native to the Andes in South America, including parts of the Andes belonging to Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Peru. The fruit was introduced in New Zealand back in 1850s and in the USA in 1920s. 


The fruit originated from South America and was introduced in many parts of the world. Nowadays they are found in most tropical regions of the world, including in the Mediterranean, Africa, Australia and India.

Flavours & Texture

Banana passionfruit is fragrant, with the aroma of oranges. Its pulp is juicy and sweet, with a tart bite and hints of banana but its seeds although they are edible they are somewhat bitter. The skin of the fruit is thick and leathery.


Banana passionfruit is best eaten out of hand. Slice the fruit lengthwise, and scoop the juicy pulp out of the skin with a spoon. The seeds of the fruit are edible. It can be used in fruit salads, smoothies, juices, jams and even in deserts such as cakes and pies.
