Introduction

The Moro Blood Orange is a separate cultivar from the classic Blood Orange, originating from Sicily, Italy. History, flavour, and nutrition converge in a citrus symphony to create the Moro Blood Orange.

History

The Moro Blood Orange is a striking fruit with a tale as vibrant as its appearance. This unique orange variety is believed to have originated in the sun-soaked groves of Sicily, Italy. The Moro Blood Orange is a natural mutation of the sweet orange, and its striking crimson hue is due to the presence of anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant. Historically, these blood oranges were cherished for their visual allure and were often considered a symbol of luxury and indulgence.

Regions

While the Moro Blood Orange has its roots in Sicily, its popularity has led to cultivation in various citrus-friendly regions around the world. Today, you can find these blood oranges flourishing in orchards across Spain, the United States (particularly in California and Florida), and other Mediterranean climates.

Flavours & Texture

Indulge your senses in the bold, tangy-sweet explosion that is the Moro Blood Orange. Its deep crimson flesh is succulent and bursting with a complex flavor profile that combines the classic citrusy zing with berry-like undertones. The texture is both juicy and firm, providing a satisfying contrast that elevates the eating experience.

Preparation

Begin by washing the fruit and slicing it into rounds or wedges. The vibrant segments can be enjoyed on their own, added to fruit salads for a pop of colour and flavour, or juiced to create refreshing beverages. For a gourmet touch, consider using Moro Blood Orange segments in salads, desserts, or as a garnish for seafood dishes.
