Physalis is a genus of fruits which are grown in warm temperate and subtropical regions of the world. The majority of Physalis species are known to be indigenous to the Americas and more than 45 species are endemic to Mexico.  In terms of their appearance, Physalis are yellow or orange in colour and in terms of size, structure and shape they are similar to a small tomato.

Approximately eighty to ninety varieties of Physalis occur in North and South America and southern Europe, in the southern parts of the warm and moderate regions.
