Introduction

Give an edge to pancake day by frying up some plantain! When fried, the edges of the fruit slices become crispy and caramelised like a butter-fried pancake – delicious. Interestingly, the plantain plant is actually considered a gigantic herb rather than a tree. The fruit is similar to a common banana, but larger.

History

It’s thought that plantain originated in Southeast Asia, coming from the horn plantain and the french plantain. Nowadays, plantains account for roughly 85% of worldwide banana cultivation.

Regions

Plantain grows in various areas of the world, including India, Africa, and tropical America.

Flavours & Texture

Unripened or green plantains have a starchy, bland taste and texture, similar to cooking bananas or potatoes. Once ripened and yellow, they develop a smooth, creamy texture and a sweeter flavour. You may find that, when partially ripe, plantain resembles sweet potato.

Preparation

Plantain is best enjoyed when cooked. Whilst unripe, you can slice and fry plantain to make chips or fake pancakes. When ripened, plantain can be boiled and mashed for a potato-like ingredient. Plantain can be eaten raw, but it’s not recommended.

Nutritional Value

Plantain is rich in carbohydrates, meaning they provide lasting energy. The fruit is also a good source of fibre, vitamins, and minerals.
