Introduction
Red Fresh Dates - also known as Zaghloul Dates - have a deep red skin and a deliciously crisp, white flesh. This exotic fruit is very rare and unique, and can be enjoyed differently at any stage of ripeness. They contain a small brown stone - or pit - that is inedible.
History
Red Dates are native to Egypt and dates are known to have been cultivated in Egypt since around 4000 BC. Interestingly, Red Dates are historically (and still now) pollinated and harvested by hand. Some pickers are taught from a very young age to climb the Red Date palm trees - that can grow up to 30 feet - to harvest the fruits.
Regions
Red Dates are native to Egypt, but nowadays are grown in places like India and Isreal. In fact, their largest place of cultivation is now in India, where they are grown and shipped all over the world – particularly Southeast Asia, Canada, and Europe.
Flavours & Texture
Red Dates are slightly milder than regular dates. They are beautifully sweet with a caramel-like flavour that offers notes of cinnamon and sugar cane. When fresh, Red Dates have a very crisp, apple-like texture. When dried, they become soft, moist and wrinkled like other dates.
Preparation
We recommend eating Red Dates when they are fresh and crisp as a raw snack. However, they are commonly enjoyed dried, too. Red Dates make an excellent addition to smoothies, syrups, desserts, and jams as a natural sweetener.
Nutritional Value
Red Dates are rich in fibre, potassium, iron, and B-vitamins.
